Mountain Top Coffee Estate farm and mill were established in 1998. Owen and Denise purchased the Estate in February 2020. Their purchase returned the farm to the Whitney family – being originally owned by one of Owen’s great uncles. Mountain Top Coffee Estate has a rich history which is inextricably entwined with the specialty coffee industry of Australia. It has been said that Australian boutique coffee began on this property. The unique low latitude climate, terroir and processing create a delicious, smooth and sweet cup. Our coffee has received accolades from all over the world. We have featured several times in Barista championships, and one year actually won the World Barista Championship. The year 2021 just saw us pick up champion coffee for our espresso ‘Microlot’ roast at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show.
We started off as a green bean only supplier, selling to higher end markets in Norway, Japan and the USA. We now have 6 years under our belts as roasters, keeping our roasted products at a very low price for our very rare breed of specialty coffee.
Ouir roasts are mostly medium plus, making them very versatile., they are characterised by mild acidity, with pleasant notes of citrus and apple. They can have dark pudding fruitiness, or else enhanced chocolate notes. These qualities are made possible by the Kenyan Arabica variety of trees we have here.
We have a large capacity wetmill and drymill for processing not only our own but other farms’ coffees from across our region. Visitors are welcome by appointment, and our packaged coffee is available to buy directly from us. We are situated about 7km East of Nimbin in the gorgeous Northern Rivers region. We think you will find it a joy to sample our unique specialty coffee and perhaps be one of the many who just keep coming back for it!
